What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry addresses urgent dental issues that require prompt attention. In some situations, delaying treatment for more than 30 minutes can determine whether your tooth is saved or lost. Dr. Trogan recognizes the importance of delivering immediate care for dental trauma. By choosing a dentist who specializes in emergency dentistry, you can be assured that your oral health will always be their highest priority.

When is emergency dentistry needed?

Common dental emergencies include:
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Persistent bleeding from the tongue, gums, or cheeks
  • Severe toothache
  • Objects lodged in the gums or soft tissues
  • Loose permanent tooth
  • Swelling in the mouth, tongue, or gums
  • Cracked tooth
  • Broken tooth
  • Lip laceration
  • Signs of infection or an abscess
If you experience any of these issues, contact Signature Smile General & Cosmetic Dentistry right away to learn the necessary steps. The office team can provide guidance on how to protect your tooth before you arrive at the practice.

Emergency Care for a Knocked-Out Tooth

If your tooth is knocked out, it may be possible to save it if you act quickly. First, locate the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the top part) instead of the roots. Gently rinse the tooth with water and also rinse your mouth with warm water. If you can, try to place the tooth back in its socket and hold it in place with gauze or a clean cloth. If you're unable to do this, place the tooth in a cup of milk to help preserve the roots, or keep it between your cheek and tongue to keep the roots moist.

Call the office immediately or have someone else call to explain the situation.

What to Expect at Your Emergency Appointment

Treatment will depend on the severity of your dental trauma. Dr. Trogan and her team will focus on relieving your pain and saving your tooth. If your tooth was knocked out, they will attempt to reimplant it. For a damaged tooth, Dr. Trogan may provide a temporary restoration to protect it until a permanent solution can be scheduled.
