What Are Crowns and Bridges?

Dental crowns are designed to restore both the function and appearance of your teeth. Crafted from durable and natural-looking porcelain, crowns are designed to replicate the look of a natural tooth. Dr. Trogan will place the crown over your damaged tooth, covering it down to the gum line to protect the original tooth structure. Crowns are commonly used for teeth with large fillings, cracks, deep cavities, severe wear, or those that have undergone a root canal. They can also serve a cosmetic purpose, improving the appearance of a tooth.

Bridges, on the other hand, consist of a series of crowns used to replace missing teeth. To create a bridge, the teeth on either side of the gap are prepared for crowns, and a custom-made bridge is fabricated to restore the missing tooth area. Bridges provide an alternative to partial dentures or implants for replacing missing teeth. The process begins with local anesthesia to numb the area where the crown or bridge will be placed. After preparing the teeth, impressions are taken and sent to our dental lab for custom fabrication. In the meantime, you will wear a temporary crown or bridge until the final restoration is ready for fitting.

When are dental crowns necessary?

Dr. Trogan may recommend a dental crown if you have:
  • Large filling
  • Fractured or broken tooth
  • Damaged filling
  • Worn-down tooth
  • Discolored tooth
  • Misshapen tooth
  • Completed root canal
  • Dental implant needing coverage
  • Bridge requiring attachment
During your exam, Dr. Trogan will evaluate whether a dental crown is the right solution for you.

What can I expect when getting dental crowns?

Before your procedure, Dr. Trogan will numb the targeted area to ensure your comfort. Next, she will prepare your tooth by gently filing down its surface and sides to create space for the crown. If a significant portion of your tooth is missing, she may use filling material to build it up and provide support for the crown.

Afterward, Dr. Trogan will take an impression of your tooth, sending it to a dental lab where your custom crown will be made. In the meantime, you'll wear a temporary crown. Once your permanent crown is ready, you will return for your second appointment, where Dr. Trogan will place and secure your final crown with dental cement.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

Dental crowns offer numerous benefits for a damaged tooth, including:
  • Restoration
  • Strengthening
  • Protection
  • Stability
The durability of your crown allows you to chew with confidence, while it also conceals imperfections that may cause self-consciousness. Made from porcelain, the crown blends seamlessly with your natural teeth, enhancing the appearance of your smile.

How do I care for my dental crowns?

To ensure the longevity of your dental crowns, it's important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, just as you would with your natural teeth. Brush at least twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, and floss daily. Using an antibacterial mouth rinse is also recommended to help maintain the durability of your crown and promote overall oral health.
